Buying a gun in Boise and Ada County

Boise is an easy place to buy a firearm. Idaho has no permit to purchase, no registration and no waiting period, and Idaho Code 18-3302J stops the city and the county from adding rules of their own. What is left is the federal process at the dealer counter, and that takes about twenty minutes on a quiet weekday.

Ordering online and picking up in the Treasure Valley

When you order a firearm from us you choose a federally licensed dealer at checkout. We ship the gun to that dealer, not to your house. You bring a valid photo identification, complete ATF Form 4473 and the dealer runs the NICS check. If the check comes back proceed, you pay the dealer's transfer fee and take the gun home the same day. There are licensed dealers all over Ada County, from downtown Boise out through Garden City, Meridian, Eagle, Star and Kuna, and many gunsmiths and pawn shops hold an FFL as well.

Ammunition, magazines, optics, lights, slings and most parts do not go through a dealer at all. They ship to your door in Idaho with no permit and no paperwork.

No permit, no wait, no registry

Idaho adds nothing to the federal process. There is no firearm owner identification card, no purchase permit, no state waiting period and no registration with any state or local agency. Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 21 for a handgun and 18 for a rifle or shotgun. A private sale between two Idaho residents needs no state background check, though a transfer to someone you know cannot legally have a firearm is a crime, and a sale to a resident of another state has to go through a dealer. Carry in Boise

Idaho Code 18-3302(4)(f) lets most adults over 18 carry a concealed firearm without a license, so nothing special applies inside Boise city limits. The Ada County Sheriff still issues both the standard five-year concealed weapons license and the enhanced license, and posts the current fees, which were $61 for a new application and $38 for a renewal as of January 7, 2026, with processing up to 90 days. The enhanced license needs an eight-hour face-to-face class and 98 rounds of live fire. Most people who apply want it for reciprocity on the drive to Utah, Oregon, Montana or Nevada. Preemption means the city cannot post its own gun ordinance, but Boise can and does regulate discharging a firearm inside city limits, and that has nothing to do with lawful self-defense or a licensed range. Courthouses, schools and federal buildings are off-limits regardless of what you carry.

Where to shoot around Boise

Black's Creek Public Shooting Range at 2420 East Kuna-Mora Road in Kuna is the Fish and Game range for the valley and the busiest range in Idaho. It has 36 benches covering 5 to 200 yards, a separate 500-meter range, and it takes centerfire rifles, rimfires, air rifles and black powder rifles and pistols. Fish and Game also lists an archery range on the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, an indoor air gun and archery range in Nampa, and a range at Garden Valley up the Payette.

Outside the developed ranges, target shooting is allowed on most Bureau of Land Management ground in Idaho where it is safe and not posted closed, but not in developed recreation sites. Take a backstop seriously in the foothills, pack every piece of brass and every target out, and check the seasonal closures on the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, which is winter range for deer and elk.

Hunting from Boise

Ada County sits in Unit 39, which pairs with Unit 38 to form the Boise River elk zone. The general any-weapon deer season in Unit 39 runs October 10 to 31, and there is a September 8 to 30 antlerless muzzleloader hunt. The Boise River zone B elk tag is any weapon, antlered only, in Unit 39 from October 27 to November 9, and the portion of Unit 39 inside Ada County is closed to the general archery elk hunt, so read the zone page carefully.

Across the county line, Unit 38 in Canyon County is short-range weapons only for deer from October 10 to 31, and the Lake Lowell sector of Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge is controlled hunt only. For birds, Canada goose and duck Area 1 both open October 19, 2026 and run to January 31, 2027, and Fort Boise, Payette River, Montour and C.J. Strike wildlife management areas are stocked pheasant release areas that need an Upland Game Bird Permit. Chukar in the foothills and out on the Owyhee front runs September 15, 2026 to January 31, 2027.

What Boise buyers actually order

The Treasure Valley shopping list is predictable and sensible: a lightweight bolt rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 or .30-06 for the October deer hunt, a 12-gauge semi-automatic for C.J. Strike and Lake Lowell, an AR-pattern rifle for Black's Creek, and a compact 9mm with a red dot for daily carry. Add a good pair of binoculars before you add another rifle.
